Jeniffer Sams, Art Education/Museum Education & Eco-Artist
Jeniffer Sams, Art Education/Art Historian/Photographer, Environmental
Activist, Animal Activist, Masters from the University of Florida in Art
Education, a Graduate of East Tennessee State University Art History/Education.
At this pivotal point in environmental history, it is not only the footprint we are leaving, it is also the boot that stands on the neck of the future for the earth which must change. Industry, dirty energy, waste, misuse of resources, pollution, and overcrowding are only a few of the daily tragedies happening to the eco-systems across the globe and forever changing our futures. Without significant changes on a global scale pushed by the local communities there will come a time when turning back is not possible as the damage will be irreversible.
A graduate of the University of Florida (UF) Masters program in Art Education with focuses on Eco-art education and Museum education, an undergraduate from East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in art history and education, Jeniffer Sams is also an Eco-Activist and Photographer. Artistically, Jeniffer’s photography style has followed her internal ethical direction in her passion as an environmental activist. She utilizes her photography to create a visual language about both the artistic beauty and the tragedy of our environmental issues. Her “Legacy We Leave” series states: "As time passes and the remnants of our lives begin to pile up the Legacy of a disposable mentality has broken through the white picket fences and neat brick walls to reveal that we as a society are swimming both literally and figuratively in our own “trash”. The pursuit of accumulating more belongings, the newest edition, faster technology and the quest for convenience appears to be some of the reasons we throw out perfectly good ‘belongings’ and buy more and more ‘things’. We are leaving a legacy that hides the trash and problems associated with a disposable lifestyle. We throw items in trashcans and dumpsters and they magically disappear until there is no more room for all that trash to be hidden. Our “trash” is now encroaching on the human environment and the animal habitats forcing us to face the mounting “Legacy We Leave.” Jeniffer’s “Legacy We Leave” series is a photographic documentation of the realities behind the façade of the “white picket fence”. Jeniffer utilizes her experiences in eco-art education, art history, and community service to expand opportunities within our community for artists’ visual expressions of their passions and create broader environmental awareness within the community.
