Ben Hill Griffen Statium's Heavener Football Complex
The Heavener Football Complex has received platinum certification from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, the highest ranking available. It is the first building in Florida and the first athletic facility in the nation to achieve platinum status. There are only 130 platinum buildings in the US and 141 worldwide.
LEED certification is based on site/location planning, energy use, water management, materials used, indoor environmental quality and innovation in the design process. The Heavener Complex earned the required 52 out of 69 possible points to receive a platinum rating.

CREX, Carbon Reduction & Energy Exchange
CARBON REDUCTION & ENERGY EXCHANGE is here to help musicians, artists and festivals green their projects, tours, and operations through socially responsible and cost-effective energy solutions. CREx benefits our Gainesville community as an initiative of the non-profit Earth Givers which engages in local energy conservation and carbon sequestration projects. The initiative aims to not only help make your project carbon-neutral but to create a residual awareness on how every single one of us can affectchange and rise to the future’s greatest challenge: global climate change and diminishing resources.Music and art are our best forms of mass communication.
TailGator Green Team
The TailGator Green Team is a volunteer-based recycling program coordinated by the UF Office of Sustainability, and in partnership with Pepsi, Physical Plant and Solid Waste Management, that aims to educate and encourage tailgating football fans to recycle and do so properly. Check out this video to learn more!
Our Impact
Since the program began in 2006, over 70 tons of recyclable aluminum, glass, and plastic have been diverted from UF’s waste stream.

Neutral Gator, University of Florida
About Us
Neutral Gator is an initiative of Earth Givers, a nonprofit focused on reducing carbon emissions through energy conservation and carbon sequestration projects. Neutral Gator is dedicated to eliminating Gainesville’s contribution to global climate change by supporting the University of Florida in reaching carbon neutrality by 2025, and by reducing the carbon emitted by the local community.
We kicked off this ambitious plan in 2008 by funding and implementing local carbon reduction projects. These projects generate carbon offsets, which are then applied toward the carbon footprint of the University of Florida (UF) Athletics season. In fact, Neutral Gator’s efforts have led to the country’s first carbon-neutral athletic program and the first carbon-neutral football season in NCAA history! We’re using UF athletic fame as a megaphone to amplify sustainability issues in the Gator Nation and beyond. Galvanizing the international sports community, the thousands-strong UF alumni network, local fans, community leaders, and other key stakeholders is an unprecedented yet essential approach toward fighting climate change—because, after all, everyone is affected.
We’re committed to creating offsets on our “home court”—unlike many carbon offset companies—because we believe a locally-based model supports, educates, and empowers Gainesville…and the Gator Nation!

Sustainable UF (University of Florida)
StewardshipThe university encourages all members of the Gator Nation to take responsibility for the environmental, economic, and social consequences of their individual and collective actions. This mindset will help create a culture shift and the creation of common/collective norms that support sustainability. It will highlight the need for sustainability to become part of everyday life and operations for the UF community – for the campus to be a living laboratory for sustainable practices and behaviors.
The Office of Sustainability is a resource that works to build and strengthen the networks that are needed to create a sustainable UF. In addition to our many programs and campaigns at the institutional level, the Green Team Network supports employees in their efforts to make UF a model of sustainability in higher education. The office also hosts the Sustainability Hut, a movable sustainability education tool, provides an opportunity for the campus community to gain knowledge, ask questions and give feedback on different topics of sustainability through weekly, interactive activities.
In addition to the Office of Sustainability, the joint-standing Sustainability Committee, numerous student organizations across campus, Student Government, and the Student Senate support a culture of sustainability at UF. The senate initiated an agency for sustainability, Gators Going Green, and passed a 2007 resolution honoring the office and its commitment to promoting sustainability. The fraternities and sororities support sustainability through their Greeks Going Green campaign.
